How much does tree removal cost in Sydney

The cost of tree removal depends on the size and species of the tree, its location, access to the property and the complexity of the job. Trees located close to houses, fences, power lines or other structures may require additional equipment and safety measures.

Northern Beaches Tree Service provides free quotes so we can assess your tree and provide an accurate price for the work required.

Do I need Council approval to remove a tree in my area?

Some trees can be removed without Council approval, while other trees require a permit or other approval. The requirements depend on factors including the tree’s height, species, location and whether it is protected.

Northern Beaches Council has specific rules governing tree removal and pruning on private property. We recommend checking the requirements before any work begins. Northern Beaches Council states that some trees under 5 metres, certain exempt species and some dead or storm-damaged trees may be exempt, while protected trees and certain native vegetation may require approval.

If you are unsure whether your tree can be removed, we can provide professional advice.

How do I know if a tree needs to be removed?

Signs that a tree may require professional assessment include dead or falling branches, significant cracks, decay, leaning, damaged roots, storm damage or a tree that is growing dangerously close to a building or other structure.

Not every damaged or unhealthy tree needs to be removed. In many cases, professional pruning or other tree-care work may be a better solution.

Our qualified arborists can assess the condition of your tree and recommend the safest and most appropriate option.

Can you remove large or dangerous trees?

Yes. Northern Beaches Tree Service provides tree removal for trees of different sizes and heights.

Large or dangerous trees require careful planning, appropriate equipment and safe work practices. Our experienced team can assess the site, determine the safest removal method and provide a quote for the required work.

Can you remove a tree close to my house or fence?

Yes. Trees growing close to houses, fences, sheds, swimming pools and other structures can often be removed using specialised techniques and equipment.

The removal method will depend on the size and location of the tree, available access and surrounding structures.

How long does tree removal take?

The time required depends on the size and location of the tree and how difficult it is to access.

A small tree may be removed relatively quickly, while a large tree in a confined backyard may require considerably more time and specialised equipment.

We can provide an estimated timeframe when we inspect the job.

What happens to the branches and timber after a tree is removed?

Depending on your requirements, branches and timber can be removed from the property as part of the tree removal service.

We can discuss your preferred options when providing your quote.

Lopping and Formative Pruning

In most instances our staff will try to avoid lopping trees. Although in some cases it is unavoidable. Generally we like to promote strong growth and structure of healthy wood through formative pruning specific to Australian Pruning Standards. By doing this we are nurturing the tree’s shape as well as styling it so that it is visually appealing to the eye.

Lopping and Formative Pruning of trees

consulting

Northern Beaches Tree Service is founded on expert knowledge of trees and the horticultural environment of Sydney. Qualified Arborists are available to give professional advice so as to have your trees and garden growing in the best possible way.

arborist reports

Arborist reports cover everything from town planning applications, vegetation management plans and for and fauna assessments and tree reporting.

Tree reporting includes assessments of trees, tree hazards, tree treatment or protection and tree replacement.

As part of this we identify pests, termites, diseases, native trees, weeds and exotic species.

Our arboricultural consultants have many years of experience and are AQF Level 5 arborists – a qualification required by many local councils for providing reports.

24 hour emergency care

Chaotic wind and rain may cause the need for an emergency removal of a tree or fallen tree branches.

Although a thorough and routine maintenance program is always best, nature and trees can be unpredictable.

Northern Beaches Tree Service is available 24hrs day and night for any emergency call out.

Please note that if the trees / branches are not on your property, we do not have authority to remove them. In this case you will need to contact your local council or the State Emergency Services on 132 500.

palm defronding

Palms are readily found throughout Sydney and the surrounding suburbs and can become very untidy and the fronds can be dangerous if they fall unexpectedly.

Northern Beaches Tree Service can de-frond and de-fruit your palm trees to ensure they look great and are safe and healthy all year round.

Palms can live up to 100 years if looked after properly!

stump grinding

Leftover tree stumps can be an eyesore, take up valuable space and become a trip hazard. Our professional stump grinding service removes unwanted tree stumps below ground level, leaving your yard clean, safe and ready for replanting, landscaping or new use.

We use specialised stump grinding equipment to efficiently remove stumps of various sizes, including difficult-to-access stumps. Serving the Northern Beaches and surrounding Sydney areas, we provide reliable, tidy and professional stump grinding services.

When Does a Tree Need to be Removed?

No leaves or growth

A tree that consistently fails to produce healthy leaves, flowers, or new growth may be in decline. Sparse foliage, small leaves, dying branches, or bare sections of the canopy can indicate poor health caused by disease, root damage, age, or environmental stress. If a tree shows little or no signs of recovery over multiple growing seasons, removal may be the safest and most practical solution.

Damage and Decay

Trees with severe trunk damage, large cracks, hollow sections, or signs of internal decay can become structurally unstable. Decay often weakens the tree from the inside, making it more likely to lose branches or collapse unexpectedly. If the damage is extensive and cannot be managed through pruning or treatment, tree removal is recommended to reduce the risk of injury or property damage.

Weather

Severe weather can weaken trees and cause broken branches, split limbs, damaged roots or unstable trunks. If a tree has been damaged by strong winds, storms or heavy rain and poses a potential safety risk, it should be assessed by a qualified arborist. In some cases, pruning or removal may be necessary to prevent further damage and protect your home and property.

Debris

Fallen branches, dead limbs and excessive debris around a tree can be signs of declining health or previous damage. Accumulated debris can also create hazards around your property and may indicate that a tree requires professional attention. Our experienced team can assess the tree, safely remove hazardous branches and recommend whether pruning or complete removal is the best option.

Growth

Overgrown trees can become a problem when branches grow too close to your home, roof, power lines or other structures. Excessive growth can also create weak or unstable branches and affect the health of the tree. Professional pruning can often manage unwanted growth, but where a tree has become unsafe or unsuitable for its location, removal may be the best solution.
